Bob Dylan ci ha regalato all'esordio del 2015 un suo nuovo album.
Si tratta di "Shadows in the Night" (Sony Music, 2015) contiene dieci canzoni prodotte da Jack Frost (pseudonimo dello stesso Dylan) ed è il 36° album da studio del menestrello d'America, l'ormai leggendario artista che ha superato la soglia dei 70 anni e che, dal 2012, non aveva prodotto un nuovo album in studio.
I brani di quest album sono delle "cover", ovvero di reinterpretazioni di classici del genere melodico e sentimentale:  più precisamente sono 10 canzoni del cosiddetto "standard pop", portate al successo da Frank Sinatra nel periodo compreso fra il 1942 e il 1963, un periodo in cui "The Voice" produsse album tematici in cui esplorava i sentimenti legati alle separazioni e alle pene d'amore.
Insomma, nulla di più lontano dalla sensibilità ed espressività dylaniana.
Eppure con la sua voce graffiante e roca, seppure ingentilita rispetto al suo lavoro "The Tempest", Bob Dylan ci ha regalato un album godibile con una musica da ascoltare per ricomporsi dopo una giornata febbrile e di fatica: nell'effetto finale incide molto una modalità di registrazione effettuata senza troppi tecnicismi e senza l'uso delle cuffie che dessero ai musicisti la possibilità dell'ascolto in playback e nessun microfono per gli strumenti.
Un tradimento rispetto alla poetica dylaniana? Forse i puristi e i "fondamentalisti" che vorrebbero un artista sempre aderire al proprio cliché, direbbero di sì, considerando anche che in quel periodo Sinatra rappresentava la musica dell'establishment e del mondo dei poteri e dei pregiudizi contro il quale erano diretti i messaggi delle canzoni di protesta.
A me, è piaciuto: in fondo bisogna anche ammettere che un artista al colmo della sua carriera, quando è in condizione di decidere in piena autonomia cosa gli piaccia più di fare, possa seguire i suoi segreti desideri e tentare degli esperimenti che lo allontanano dal solco principale del suo stile, concedendosi dei vezzi e mettendo il proprio suggello su territori inesplorati.
Ma del resto Bob Dylan è stato sempre uno sperimentatore e ha sorpreso più di una volta i suoi fan con repentini cambiamenti.
Mentre le canzoni di protesta e quelle "arrabbiate" vivono se c'è un contesto nel quale possano essere calate, queste possono mantenere una loro vita indipendente da qualsiasi contesto con le loro architetture lievi di sentimenti.
Bob Dylan ha dichiarato: “Realizzare quest’album è stato un autentico privilegio. Da tempo volevo fare un disco come questo ma non ho mai avuto il coraggio di avvicinarmi ad arrangiamenti complessi per 30 elementi e adattarli per una band di cinque. Il segreto di queste interpretazioni? Conoscere benissimo i brani. È stato fatto tutto dal vivo, in una sola take, due al massimo. Niente sovraincisioni, niente cabina voce, niente cuffie, niente tracce separate: è stato mixato più o meno come è stato inciso. Non mi sembra assolutamente di aver realizzato delle cover di queste canzoni, ne sono state fatte talmente tante che alcuni brani sono stati sepolti dalle loro stesse cover. Con questo album io e la mia band stiamo fondamentalmente facendo riscoprire queste canzoni”.
Nelle sessioni di registrazione che hanno consentito la realizzazione dell'album sono state incise in totale 23 tracce, dalle quali ne sono state scelte 10 soltanto.

L'album è essenziale: vi è, all'interno, soltanto una copertina in cartocino con i titoli delle canzoni e i riferimenti agli autori dei testi, oltre che la composizione della band.
Bob Dylan qui non suona alcuno strumento , ma si limita esclusivamente alla parte vocale.
L'album ha riscosso un successo di pubblico e ha raccolto delle critiche positive.

(da Wikipedia) Shadows in the Night consists of ten ballads that were recorded by Frank Sinatra in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The songs were selected from that period of Sinatra's career when he was recording thematic albums that explored emotions of separation and heartache—albums such as Where Are You? (1957), which includes four of the songs on Shadows, No One Cares (1959), and All Alone (1962). Most of the songs are Tin Pan Alley standards, delivered in a slow to mid-tempo pace, that "often luxuriate in melancholy" and communicate a sense of loneliness. The arrangements center on Dylan's vocals supported throughout by Donny Herron's gliding pedal-steel guitar and Tony Garnier's bass.

Shadows in the Night was recorded in 2014 at Capitol Studios in studio B, where Frank Sinatra often recorded his albums. According to the album's recording engineer, Al Schmitt, the songs on Shadows were recorded live with Dylan singing and his five-man touring band performing the songs in the same room at the same time without headphones. Dylan did not want to see any microphones other than the one he was using for his vocals, so Schmitt had to set up the rest of the microphones away from the instruments.

The acoustic bass microphone was eight feet from the bass, and set down and away so it couldn't be seen; the same approach was taken for the acoustic guitar. For the electric guitar and pedal steel, Schmitt placed the microphones close to the amplifiers, which were set off to the side

According to Schmitt, recording sessions typically were held from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and then after a two-hour break, an evening session was held from 8:00 pm to around 10:30 pm. They worked Monday through Friday with weekends off. Dylan prepared each session by listening to the Sinatra recordings, according to Schmitt, who noted:  He would listen to the songs over and over and get Sinatra's intention on what he was doing with the song. Then he would only do two or three takes on each tune, but he would make it his own. It had nothing to do with Sinatra. He'd just learn what the song was about and whatever. It was an interesting way to work.

A total of 23 songs were recorded, from which ten were chosen for the album.
